Whale Tail

Yesterday at Onekahakaha a group of 6 year old boys sprinted past our beach chairs toward the ocean. Their mothers followed pointing and smiling. "There's a whale out there," they said. "Look! Past the lifeguard station to the left."
I trained my eyes on the waters, and there it was. A whale tail is unmistakable. I saw it one, two, three times. I screamed with delight.
Then, I saw a breach, but it was small. My sister said, "Those are babies."
"How can you tell?" I asked.
"An adult whale is a bus coming out of the ocean," she said.
I laughed and scanned down the beach. The six year old boys were out on the lava rock 50 feet into the ocean. The moms were looking out watching and waiting for a breach.
I breathed it all in and thought, "I'm so glad I'm here."
